Remote Education

Overview

At Forsbrook CE Primary School, we believe children learn best in the classroom, as part of our school family, and we aim for all pupils to attend school in person wherever possible. Remote education is only provided when a child cannot attend school safely, for example due to illness, injury, or in line with government guidance. It is not a substitute for attending school and is not used as an alternative to our normal attendance expectations.

Remote education helps your child stay connected to their learning and their class while they are temporarily unable to be in school.

When remote education may be used

We will consider providing remote education when:

  • A pupil is unable to attend school due to illness, injury, or recovery from a medical procedure, but is well enough to complete some schoolwork
  • A pupil has a health condition, or is awaiting the outcome of medical advice, that means they cannot attend in person for a period of time
  • The school is advised to close, or restrict attendance, due to a health and safety issue or government guidance

Remote education is not used as a sanction or in place of our Behaviour Policy. A child who is not attending due to a suspension will not automatically be offered remote education, in line with DfE guidance.

What remote education looks like

  • Timing: we aim to provide remote education as soon as reasonably practicable, normally from the first full day of absence where this applies
  • Core learning: daily English, maths and reading activities, in line with what your child’s class is currently covering
  • Wider curriculum: where an absence continues beyond a few days, we will include other subjects to keep learning broad and balanced
  • How work is set: a paper work pack collected from the school office. Children in Key Stage 2 may be able to access learning via Showbie (please contact the school)
  • Support for families without a device or internet access: please contact the school office and we will arrange a paper-based alternative

Work is adapted to suit your child’s age and needs, including for pupils with SEND, in line with our SEND Policy.

Additional resources: Oak National Academy

Alongside the work set directly by your child’s class teacher, we also signpost parents and carers to Oak National Academy, a free online resource funded by the Department for Education. We recommend it because:

  • its lessons are planned by qualified teachers and mapped to the national curriculum, so content stays in line with what your child would be learning in school
  • it offers a structured, ready-made timetable by year group, which is useful if a period of absence continues for more than a day or two and additional material is needed alongside core tasks
  • it can be a helpful extra option for families who want more structure or additional practice, without added planning time for teaching staff

Oak National Academy is a supplementary resource, not a replacement for the work set directly by school. Where there’s a difference between the two, please follow the guidance provided by your child’s class teacher.

Staying in touch

  • A member of staff will make contact with families at least once during a period of remote education to check in on wellbeing and support with any questions
  • Please contact your child’s class teacher or the school office if you have any difficulty accessing the work provided, or if your child needs additional support
