Music
What are we aiming for?
At Forsbrook Church of England Primary School, our Music curriculum is designed to nurture creativity, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation of music. We believe that music is a powerful form of expression that brings people together, enhances wellbeing, and enriches our school community.
Music is woven into the fabric of school life—from daily acts of collective worship to performances in local and national events. Rooted in our Christian ethos and inspired by the verse, “Start children off on the way they should go,” we provide children with opportunities to discover and develop their musical talents, helping them to flourish both in and beyond the classroom.
Our Music curriculum aims to develop children who:
- Are confident and enthusiastic performers, both individually and as part of a group.
- Appreciate a wide range of musical genres, traditions, and cultures.
- Understand how music can influence emotions and communicate meaning.
- Use musical vocabulary to describe and discuss music with accuracy.
- Can read simple notation and compose their own pieces using tuned instruments.
How do we achieve this?
Music is taught weekly across the school and is supported by a range of enrichment opportunities. We follow a structured curriculum that builds musical knowledge and skills progressively, ensuring that all children experience the joy of making and responding to music.
Key features of our approach include:
- Singing and performance as a regular part of school life, including in worship, assemblies, and concerts.
- Use of tuned and untuned instruments to explore rhythm, pitch, and composition.
- Opportunities to listen to and appraise music from different genres, cultures, and historical periods.
- Participation in local and national music events, such as performances at the Victoria Hall.
- Access to instrumental tuition and extracurricular music clubs for those who wish to develop their skills further.
What difference is this making to our pupils?
Our Music curriculum helps children grow in confidence and creativity, giving them many chances to enjoy performing and making music together. They learn to listen carefully, understand different styles, and express themselves through singing and playing instruments. Music also helps pupils develop important skills like focus and teamwork, while boosting their wellbeing and sense of belonging. Whether performing in assemblies or concerts, children feel proud of their achievements and excited to keep exploring music throughout their lives. Through music, we aim to build confidence, foster creativity, and provide every child with the opportunity to shine.
