Physical Education (P.E.)

What are we aiming for?

At Forsbrook Church of England Primary School, our Physical Education curriculum is designed to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in physical activity, both competitively and recreationally. We aim to develop physically literate children who understand the importance of health, fitness, and wellbeing, and who carry these values with them throughout life.

Our P.E. curriculum aims to develop children who:

  • Are confident, enthusiastic participants in a wide range of physical activities.
  • Understand how physical activity supports their physical, emotional, and social wellbeing.
  • Demonstrate resilience, determination, and a positive mindset.
  • Show respect, fairness, and teamwork in both competitive and cooperative situations.
  • Develop agility, balance, coordination, and control through a variety of sports and movement disciplines.
  • Understand the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle.

How do we achieve this?

P.E. is taught through the GetSet4PE scheme, which aligns with the National Curriculum and provides a progressive, inclusive, and engaging programme of study. Each class receives two hours of high-quality physical activity per week.

Our approach includes:

  • A broad and balanced curriculum covering games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, and outdoor adventurous activities.
  • A focus on fundamental movement skills in Key Stage 1, building confidence and competence through fun and varied activities.
  • In Key Stage 2, children apply and refine a broader range of skills, learning to link movements, develop tactics, and work collaboratively.
  • Opportunities to compete in intra- and inter-school sports, promoting sportsmanship and team spirit.
  • A strong emphasis on health and fitness, including understanding how the body works and how to stay active and well.

We also enrich our curriculum through:

  • Extra-curricular clubs and sports teams.
  • Participation in local sporting events and competitions.
  • Cross-curricular links with Science and PSHE to reinforce the importance of physical and mental health.

By promoting enjoyment, inclusion, and achievement in physical activity, we aim to empower every child to lead a healthy, active life and to develop a lifelong love of sport and movement.

What difference is this making to our pupils?

By promoting enjoyment, inclusion, and achievement in physical activity, we aim to empower every child to lead a healthy, active life and to develop a lifelong love of sport and movement. Our P.E. curriculum helps children build confidence and resilience while developing key physical skills such as coordination, balance, and teamwork. Pupils learn the value of fairness and respect both on and off the field. Through swimming lessons and learning to ride a bike, children gain essential life skills that boost their independence and physical confidence. They also have opportunities to try a wide range of sports, discovering new interests and talents. Many children find joy in participating in sports and physical activities, which supports their overall wellbeing and social development. This positive attitude to health and fitness often continues beyond school, helping pupils to maintain an active lifestyle.
