We have had a fantastic start to the year, filled with creativity, curiosity, and lots of new learning across all subjects!
English
This term, we explored the inspiring text Look Up!—a story about Rocket, a young girl who dreams of becoming an astronaut, inspired by Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to travel into space. Using this text as a stimulus, the children wrote imaginative diary entries describing a day in space.
Reading
Our reading lessons have taken us even further into space through the book Lights on Cotton Rock. We followed Heather’s journey as her long-time wish of meeting an alien and travelling into space finally comes true. The children enjoyed exploring the themes of imagination, patience, and wonder.
Maths
In Maths, we have been investigating numbers to 100, exploring patterns and relationships between numbers using fact families. The children have deepened their understanding of place value by recognising tens and ones and have used practical resources to support their learning. We have also been counting in 2s, 5s, 10s, and 3s, and developing our understanding of addition and subtraction through the concrete, pictorial, and abstract approach.
Art & Design
Our Art unit, Explore and Draw, has focused on developing sketching skills and making thoughtful use of sketchbooks. We have viewed artists as explorers and collectors, studying the work of Andy Goldsworthy and Alice Fox. Inspired by their art, we created our own pieces of land art and beautiful autumn floor drawings using a range of natural materials and drawing mediums.
Geography
In Geography, we explored hot and cold places around the world, locating them on a map and discussing their key features. The children enjoyed the challenge of packing suitcases with suitable items for either a desert or an Arctic holiday!
Science
Our Science topic, Animals and Their Habitats, has taken us on a journey through the world’s biomes. We learned how animals adapt to survive in different environments and investigated microhabitats in our own school grounds to see which creatures live there and why.
Religious Education
In RE, we explored the Creation Story in depth and found creative ways to retell it. We reflected on our wonderful world and designed posters to encourage others to take care of our beautiful planet.
It has been a busy and exciting half-term full of enthusiasm and great effort from all the children. We are so proud of everything they have achieved and are looking forward to another brilliant term ahead!
