Year 5 – Autumn 1 Update

Nov 3, 2025 | Year 5 2025

Off to a Great Start!

This half term has been full of exciting learning and memorable experiences!

In English, we explored the theme of heroes, diving into inspiring biographies from Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls. Our guided reading sessions helped us develop key skills like inference and using evidence from the text, as we learned about remarkable women who changed the world. We also discovered the daring story of Annie Edson Taylor—the first person to survive a trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel—and wrote diary entries from her perspective, using paragraphs, fronted adverbials, and accurate punctuation.

In maths, we built strong foundations in place value, addition and subtraction, and stretched our thinking with multiplication, factors, multiples, square and prime numbers. Our history unit asked the big question: Were the Vikings traders, raiders or something else? Using a range of sources, we explored how they were represented and drew our own conclusions.

In science, we investigated the lifecycles of animals and plants, even having a go at growing our own onions using asexual reproduction!

In RE, we reflected on how Christians believe God is loving and holy, with a highlight being our interviews with Christian parents about their faith.

Art lessons saw us creating imaginative 3D maps linked to our hobbies, using typography and drawing skills. In computing, we learned how systems and search engines work.

In music, we’ve been mastering three notes on the toot and enjoying making music together.

Beyond the classroom, we took part in Bikeability Level 2, learning to ride safely on the roads, and proudly led the whole school in worship during our Harvest assembly.
