Explorers of Learning: From Trinidad to Twycross!
What a fantastic start to Year 3 it has been!
This half term, the children have embraced every challenge with curiosity, creativity and friendship. In English, we were inspired by Floella Benjamin’s Coming to England, exploring her journey from Trinidad to London while developing our writing skills. We focused on grouping related ideas into paragraphs, using prepositions to express time, place and cause, and punctuating direct speech with inverted commas. The children brought their learning together by writing heartfelt letters from Floella to her teacher in Trinidad, reflecting on how her life had changed. In Guided Reading, we explored The Windrush Story, which built on our English learning by helping us compare how different writers use language and structure to tell real-life journeys.
In Maths, we built confidence with numbers within 1000, tackling place value, addition and subtraction. Science has been full of discovery as we explored how our bodies move, learning about skeletons, muscles and joints, and comparing them with those of other animals. A highlight was our visit to Twycross Zoo, where we investigated how animals find their food and experienced hands-on science in action! In Geography, we became global explorers, studying climate zones, hemispheres and weather patterns, while in Art we used charcoal to create bold gestural drawings inspired by Laura McKendry and Edgar Degas.
Our Computing unit, Connecting Computers, helped us understand how digital devices work through input, process and output. We even acted out our own “human computers”! In PSHE, we thought about our dream school and the importance of our class value, Friendship, showing compassion and respect in everything we do. In RE, we explored the Christian concept of the Trinity, learning how Christians show their belief in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit through worship and the way they live. We also began our Spanish journey, learning simple greetings and discovering the many countries where Spanish is spoken. It has been a half term filled with learning, laughter and friendship – a wonderful start to our Year 3 adventure!
