From Fractions to Festivities: Year 5’s Busy Half Term

This half term, we have enjoyed a fantastic range of exciting learning experiences. In Maths, we strengthened our understanding of fractions by comparing, ordering, and calculating with them, growing more confident and accurate each week. In English, we studied Beowulf and used it to inspire our own heroic adventure stories, focusing on dialogue and expanded noun phrases to bring our writing to life.

During Guided Reading, we explored Hansel and Gretel, discussing its themes and analysing how language creates mood and tension. In D&T, we put our sewing skills to work by designing and making festive felt Christmas decorations, with wonderful support from our volunteers.

In Science, we investigated the properties of materials, while in Geography, we learned about earthquakes and volcanoes and how they shape our planet. We also completed our final half term of swimming, making great progress and growing in confidence. In Computing, we learned to programme a micro:bit, creating simple games and interactive features. Our music lessons have been full of energy as we continued practising our toots and learning new notes and tunes.

To finish the term, we enjoyed lots of festive fun, including meeting real reindeer, drinking hot chocolate, and watching the brilliant Key Stage 1 performances. It’s been a wonderful half term, and we should feel very proud of everything we’ve achieved.
