Year 3 – Autumn 2 Update

Jan 5, 2026 | Year 3 2025

Learning, laughter and a little Christmas magic in Year 3

Autumn Term 2 has been another busy and exciting half term in Year 3.

In English, the children began exploring Winter’s Child, developing their narrative writing by focusing on characters, settings and plot, while practising how to use conjunctions and adverbs to show time, place and cause, and punctuating direct speech accurately. In Guided Reading, we studied Ice Palace by Robert Swindells, asking thoughtful questions, making inferences and exploring powerful vocabulary. In Maths, the children strengthened their addition and subtraction skills before moving on to length and perimeter, learning how to measure, convert units and calculate the perimeter of shapes. Science lessons sparked curiosity as we investigated forces and magnets, while in History we explored life in prehistoric Britain, comparing the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age and using evidence to decide which period we would have preferred to live in.

Creativity and practical learning were at the heart of this half term. In Design and Technology, the children explored bread as part of a healthy diet and were lucky to take part in a lesson with a professional baker, learning how to knead and shape dough in preparation for making their own bread. They also created festive wreaths to sell at the Christmas market, showing fantastic teamwork and creativity. In Computing, pupils produced imaginative stop-frame animations, adding sound and text to bring their stories to life. PSHE focused on celebrating difference, kindness and problem-solving, while in RE we explored Jewish festivals and family life. We ended the term with plenty of festive cheer, including Christmas celebrations and a very special visit from Santa’s reindeer. What a magical way to round off a hardworking half term!
