Learning, Exploring, Celebrating… Another Jam-Packed Half Term in Year 3
Spring Term 1 has been another action-packed and inspiring half term in Year 3. In English, the children immersed themselves in Stone Age Boy, using it as a stimulus to write their own exciting Stone Age stories. They worked hard to develop character and setting, while confidently using direct speech to bring their narratives to life. In Guided Reading, we explored The Iron Man, focusing on drawing inferences, identifying themes and discussing deeper meanings within the text.
In Maths, pupils continued to build their understanding of multiplication and division, applying their knowledge through problem-solving and reasoning activities.
Our learning across the wider curriculum has been equally engaging. In Science, the children investigated rocks, fossils and soils, examining their properties and learning how fossils are formed.
History lessons introduced our second British History unit, where we explored why the Romans invaded and settled in Britain and the impact they had on life at the time.
In Computing, pupils experimented with sequencing sounds before using algorithms to code their own musical instruments.
Design and Technology focused on shell structures, with the children creating something very special as part of a gift for the important ladies in their lives (no spoilers!).
In RE, we explored the big question, How do festivals show what matters to Muslims?, while in Spanish the children learned to name a variety of fruits.
Beyond the classroom, Year 3 have enjoyed a rich range of enrichment experiences this half term. We began our swimming unit in PE and also developed our teamwork and skills through learning to play netball.
The whole school theatre trip to watch The Little Mermaid was a real highlight. We also celebrated World Religion Day by learning about the Hindu faith, tasting traditional sweet treats, listening to music and having a go at traditional dancing.
As part of Internet Safety Day, the children explored smart technology, safe choices and the responsible use of AI. Children’s Mental Health Week, themed “This is My Place”, gave pupils time to reflect on belonging and wellbeing, culminating in a thoughtful class display of their safe places. We were also delighted to welcome two new children to Year 3, who have settled in wonderfully and quickly become valued members of our class community.
Phew! Time for a well-earned half-term break!
