Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

What are we aiming for?

At Forsbrook Church of England Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is central to our vision of nurturing happy, healthy, and compassionate individuals. We aim to equip children with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to thrive personally and socially, both now and in the future.

Our PSHE curriculum aims to develop children who:

  • Understand that they are important, valued, and loved.
  • Show kindness, respect, and empathy towards others.
  • Can recognise, express, and manage their emotions effectively.
  • Are resilient and equipped with strategies to navigate life’s challenges.
  • Are proud of their individuality and confident in their identity.
  • Understand how to stay healthy and safe—physically, mentally, and online.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships and know how to resolve conflict.
  • Are prepared for the responsibilities and opportunities of modern life.

How do we achieve this?

PSHE is taught weekly across the school using the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, which provides a comprehensive and progressive programme covering all aspects of Personal, Social, Health, Economic, Relationships and Health Education (RSHE).

The Jigsaw curriculum is structured around six core themes, taught across the year:

  1. Being Me in My World
  2. Celebrating Difference
  3. Dreams and Goals
  4. Healthy Me
  5. Relationships
  6. Changing Me

These themes are explored through engaging lessons that include discussion, reflection, role-play, and mindfulness activities. The curriculum is designed to be inclusive and responsive to the needs of all learners, including those with SEND.

PSHE is further embedded through:

  • Collective worship and our school’s Christian values.
  • Cross-curricular links with subjects such as Science, P.E., and Computing (e.g. health, fitness, and online safety).
  • Special events and themed days, including charity work, anti-bullying week, and mental health awareness.
  • A whole-school ethos that promotes emotional wellbeing, kindness, and respect.

What difference is this making to our pupils?

Our PSHE curriculum supports children to feel valued and confident in themselves while learning how to get along well with others. They develop important skills like managing their emotions, resolving conflicts, and making healthy choices for their bodies and minds. By exploring real-life topics in a safe and supportive environment, pupils grow in resilience and kindness. This helps them navigate challenges more confidently now and prepares them for the responsibilities they will face in the future. By placing personal development at the heart of our curriculum, we aim to help every child flourish and grow into a confident, caring, and responsible member of society.
