Apr 8, 2024 | Year 5 2023/2024

Year 5 has embarked on an exhilarating journey this half term, immersing themselves in the captivating realms of space exploration and delving into the rich tapestry of Mayan civilisation.

The launch of our space unit ignited a spark of curiosity among the children as they eagerly absorbed knowledge about our solar system. Engaging in hands-on activities, such as creating planetary posters and simulating the phases of the moon using Oreo biscuits, enhanced their understanding and piqued their interest. Exploring the Earth and moon’s orbit with torches added a dynamic dimension to their learning experience.

Becoming astronauts in our imaginative adventures, the students delved into fictional diary entries, weaving tales of exploration and discovery with vivid vocabulary. This culminated in the creation of their own dramatic and expressive diary entries, showcasing their blossoming writing skills.

In History, the focus shifted to the intriguing timelines of the Mayan civilization, particularly the classic period. From unravelling their religious beliefs to understanding their architectural prowess in building homes and their innovative approaches to food, the students gained invaluable insights into this ancient civilization’s way of life.

Undoubtedly, the highlight of this half term was our participation in the dance extravaganza at the Victoria Hall. Drawing inspiration from the musical Matilda, the students showcased their talents with an electrifying performance, leaving the audience spellbound and earning thunderous applause.

As we reflect on the events of this eventful half term, it is evident that Year 5 has embraced every opportunity for learning and exploration with enthusiasm and creativity, making it a truly memorable and enriching experience for all involved.
