Art & Design Intent

Through Art and Design, children are able to express their creativity and talents through different approaches and opportunities. Christians believe that life is a gift entrusted by a loving creator God to humankind for a purpose and this purpose is seen as the creative spirit within each person. At Forsbrook, we aim to explore, celebrate and enjoy the world in all its mystery and diversity. Through studying a wide range of artists from different cultures and backgrounds, children can begin to appreciate different perspectives. As in the biblical verse, ‘Start children off the way the way they should go’, we provide children with a range of experiences and opportunities which gives them the confidence and belief to do their best and believe anything is possible for them through their God given gifts and talent. This helps all to flourish and embrace the opportunities beyond school.

At Forsbrook, we value Art and Design as an important part of a child’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. The subject provides children with the opportunities and experiences to develop and extend knowledge and skills whilst expressing their individual interests, thoughts, and ideas. Our curriculum is crafted in such a way to engage, inspire, and challenge children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to participate, experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Children will investigate and evaluate a wide range of work from many artists to empower them to think creatively and critically.

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

What are we aiming for?

Our ART & DESIGN curriculum aims to create children who:

  • have creative vision and can express their individuality through design
  • can use a range of art skills and techniques to create a desired effect
  • have a good knowledge of a range of artists, their individual styles and the impact they have had
How do we achieve this?

At Forsbrook, our Art and Design lessons are taught over a number of weeks to allow children to acquire a wealth of substantive knowledge as well as learning and embracing unique skills. Teachers use Access Art resources, which have been designed by a set of highly skilled artists, to inform the planning and delivery of rich, fulfilling, and fun lessons. In the Autumn term children focus on drawing and sketchbook work, in the Spring term children explore colour and surface including printmaking, painting, and collage. In the Summer term children participate in a 3-dimensional unit of work. These pathways allow children to explore and investigate many artists along their creative journey. At Forsbrook we believe that every child can be an artist as we equip them with the knowledge and experiences to complete and showcase their artwork. Children are given time to experiment, explore and interpret art in their own way. Furthermore, children are encouraged to permit their creativity to express themselves through this subject in a free manner. During non-art half terms children take part in short weekly activities titled ‘My Drawing Journey’ to continue to develop the skills of drawing and sketching. Moreover, these fundamental skills underpin all work throughout the year.
