It has been a busy and engaging half term in Year 5, with lots of fantastic learning across the curriculum.
In English, we have been exploring the fascinating world of coral reefs. The children have written persuasive leaflets, developing their use of modal verbs, technical vocabulary and persuasive language techniques to encourage others to protect these important habitats. We have been very impressed with their creativity and growing confidence in writing for a purpose.
In Mathematics, we have focused on geometry. The children have been learning how to use a protractor accurately to measure and draw angles. They have also been plotting coordinates, as well as reflecting and translating shapes. In addition, we have explored the properties of different shapes, strengthening both reasoning and problem-solving skills.
In Design and Technology, we have taken part in a practical and hands-on unit about healthy eating. The children investigated different types of salads, tasted a variety of ingredients, and then designed and made their own salads. It was wonderful to see their independence and enthusiasm in the kitchen!
In Religious Education, we have been learning about The Kingdom of God. The children explored different parables from the Bible and made thoughtful links to the work of Christian Aid, considering how these teachings influence people’s actions and values today.
In Science, we have been learning about space and Earth. We explored the phases of the moon and how the Earth rotates. The children also carried out an investigation to observe how shadows change throughout the day, developing their scientific enquiry skills.
In Computing, we have been developing our digital creativity by learning how to create vector drawings. The children have practised using tools such as copying, pasting, layering, grouping and resizing shapes to produce detailed designs.
