Year 4 – Autumn 1 Update

Nov 3, 2025 | Year 4 2025

What a fantastic start to the year it has been for Year 4!

We are so proud of how brilliantly the children have settled into their new class. From day one, they have shown enthusiasm, curiosity, and a wonderful sense of teamwork. Our class value this term has been Compassion, and it has truly shone through – from the way the children support one another in their learning to their kindness and care around school.

In English, we’ve been inspired by the beautiful picture book Gorilla by Anthony Browne. The children explored the story’s themes of imagination and companionship, creating brilliant fact files all about gorillas. They have been practising skills such as expanded noun phrases and fronted adverbials, and are now completing their first short stories using direct speech and exciting vocabulary to engage the reader.

In Maths, we began by exploring four-digit numbers, using Base 10 to investigate place value and deepen understanding. The children have worked hard to master addition and subtraction, confidently using mathematical vocabulary such as minuend, subtrahend, and regrouping. Their reasoning and problem-solving skills are growing stronger every day.

Our Geography topic on Rivers and the Water Cycle has been a real highlight. The children have learned about the features of a river, from source to mouth, and how water travels through the cycle. On our trip to The Wolseley Centre, they carried out river studies, comparing the lake and river by investigating current, temperature, and habitats. Their enthusiasm and teamwork made it a fantastic day out!

In Art, we’ve explored Storytelling through Drawing, studying illustrators Shaun Tan and Laura Carlin and experimenting with techniques like watercolours and mixed media. Inspired by The Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll, the children created their own concertina books filled with imaginative artwork – it was creative, colourful, and wonderfully messy!

Our Science topic on States of Matter has sparked great curiosity. The children have explored solids, liquids, and gases, carrying out investigations to see how materials change when heated or cooled.

We’ve also enjoyed some amazing opportunities this term – including taking part in first aid training. The children learned how to stay calm in emergencies, treat minor injuries, and call for help. We’re so proud of our new Year 4 First Aiders!

It’s been a brilliant first half-term , full of learning, laughter, and compassion. Well done, Year 4!
