Autumn 2 in Year 1 – What We Have Been Learning…
English
Our English lessons have taken children on a journey into the world of non-fiction through the story Katie in London. The children became curious explorers, discovering how information books share facts. They enjoyed learning about famous London landmarks and used this knowledge to write their own non-fiction pieces. Along the way, they practised writing clear sentences, using capital letters and full stops, and grew in confidence as young writers.
Mathematics
Maths lessons have been full of hands-on learning and excitement as children explored addition and subtraction within 10. Using practical resources and the part–whole model, they discovered how numbers can be split and put back together like puzzle pieces. Children also enjoyed comparing numbers using greater than (>) and less than (<), building confidence as they solved problems and shared their mathematical thinking.
History
In History, children stepped back in time to learn about timelines. They created timelines of their own lives, sharing special memories and important moments. This helped them understand the difference between the past and the present and reflect on how they have grown and changed.
Science
Science lessons encouraged curiosity as children explored humans and animals. They learned about the parts of the human body and discovered how living things grow and change. Through discussion and activities, children learned about the importance of food, water, and care in keeping all living things healthy.
Religious Education
Religious Education lessons were filled with colour and celebration as children learned about Christmas and Diwali. They explored why these festivals are special, listening to stories, learning about traditions, and discovering how people celebrate in different ways. Children enjoyed sharing their own experiences and developing an understanding and respect for different beliefs and cultures.
Educational Visit – Peak Wildlife Park
A highlight of the term was our exciting visit to Peak Wildlife Park. Children had the opportunity to see a wide range of animals up close and learn more about their habitats and needs. The trip brought our Science learning to life and sparked lots of curiosity and thoughtful questions. It was a wonderful day filled with discovery, excitement, and unforgettable memories.
