Year 1 – Summer 2 Update

May 22, 2025 | Year 1

English

This half term, the children have been exploring A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare. They have brought the story to life using drama techniques such as freeze frames and conscience alley, which helped them to understand the characters’ thoughts and motivations. These interactive sessions not only boosted their confidence in speaking and listening but also strengthened their storytelling skills. Building on their understanding of the plot, the children then worked on redrafting their own creative endings to the story, demonstrating imagination, sequencing, and use of descriptive language.

Design and Technology

In DT, the children have been learning about nutrition and healthy eating. They explored the different food groups and learned what makes a balanced meal. Using this knowledge, they designed and created their own healthy breakfast plates, considering variety, colour, and nutritional value. The project helped them develop planning and design skills while reinforcing the importance of making healthy food choices.

Religious Education

Our RE topic this term focused on how Christians talk to God. The children discussed and reflected on different ways Christians pray and why prayer is important to them. They explored the idea of talking to God through words, songs, and quiet reflection, gaining a deeper understanding of faith and different religious practices. Thoughtful discussions encouraged respect for beliefs that may be different from their own.

Computing

In Computing, our focus was on online safety. The children learned about the importance of keeping personal information private and how to behave safely and respectfully when using the internet. They explored simple scenarios and discussed what they should do if something online makes them feel unsure or uncomfortable. These lessons have equipped them with essential skills to navigate the digital world responsibly.

Science

This half term in Science, the children explored the topic of materials. They investigated a variety of everyday materials, learning to identify them and describe their properties such as hard, soft, waterproof, bendy, or absorbent. Through hands-on experiments, they tested which materials are best suited for different purposes, such as building, clothing, or packaging. These investigations helped them to think scientifically by making predictions, observing results, and drawing conclusions.

It has been a fantastic half term full of creativity, exploration, and meaningful learning experiences across the curriculum. The children have shown great enthusiasm and curiosity, and we’re very proud of their continued growth and achievement!
