Summer 1 has been a whirlwind of learning and achievement for Year 6!
We’ve tackled important global issues, delved into scientific wonders, been inspired by incredible stories, and made a huge final push before a well-deserved celebration.
Our English lessons took a deep dive into the pressing issue of plastic pollution with ‘Plastic Planet’ by Georgia Amson-Bradshaw. This thought-provoking book spurred us on to write detailed explanation texts about the problem, as well as creative narratives from the perspective of a plastic bag or bottle. The children did an amazing job bringing to life the real challenges our world faces regarding plastic waste, highlighting the environmental impact and the need for change.
In Science, we began our exciting journey into the world of Light. We explored various sources of light, from natural to artificial, and conducted experiments to understand reflections. We also investigated how shadows are formed and discussed how their length and position change throughout the day, linking this to the movement of the sun.
Our Guided Reading sessions were filled with inspiration as we explored ‘Great Adventurers’ by Alastair Humphreys. We learned about many different adventurers who changed the world through their incredible journeys and discoveries. Their stories of courage, determination, and resilience truly captivated us and showed us the power of pushing boundaries.
With SATs on the horizon, Maths this half term was all about one final, big push! We focused heavily on problem-solving scenarios, drawing upon every bit of knowledge and skill we have soaked up throughout Key Stage 2. The children showed incredible determination and resilience, tackling complex questions with growing confidence. We were so incredibly proud of their hard work!
We ended our SATs week with a fantastic celebration afternoon complete with a delicious ice cream – thanks, Mrs. Cooke! It was the perfect way to acknowledge all the children’s efforts and let off some steam after such an intense week.
It’s amazing how much we managed to squeeze into such a short half-term, demonstrating the incredible dedication and energy of our Year 6 class. We have just one more half term to go before we say our goodbyes to Forsbrook… Let’s make it count!
