Year 6 – Spring 2 Update

May 22, 2025 | Year 6

What a busy and brilliant Spring 2 we’ve had in Year 6! The children have tackled some big ideas with incredible enthusiasm and produced some truly amazing work.

We delved into Nicola Davies’ poignant book, ‘The Day War Came’, which explores the experiences of a child forced to flee their home. This powerful story inspired us to write our own diaries, focusing on using emotive language to convey feelings of fear, uncertainty, hope, and resilience. The children’s entries were incredibly thoughtful and moving, really showing their understanding of the characters’ journeys.

Our history lessons transported us back to World War Two. We explored the experiences of evacuees, learning about the challenges they faced when sent away from their families. We also investigated the power of propaganda posters and how they were used to influence public opinion, and discovered the vital and varied roles of women in WW2, from working in factories to serving in the armed forces.

Science Week saw us get hands-on with Electricity! We designed and built our own houses as part of a fascinating challenge. The goal? To create homes that could not only survive rising sea levels but also utilise power efficiently. It was fantastic to see the children applying their scientific and construction knowledge to a real-world problem.

In RE, we explored the profound question: ‘How does religion help when life gets hard?’ This prompted some truly insightful and heartfelt discussions. The children shared a wide range of perspectives and demonstrated incredible empathy and understanding as they explored different beliefs and how they can offer comfort and guidance during difficult times.

Our computing lessons were full of excitement as we became game developers! Using Scratch, we designed and created our very own games, exploring key coding concepts like variables and sprites. The children loved bringing their creative ideas to life and learning how to make their games interactive and engaging.

It’s been a busy but incredibly rewarding half term for Year 6. We’re so proud of everything the children have achieved, and now we can’t wait to embrace the joys of summer!
