Year 4 – Autumn 1 Update

Dec 23, 2025 | Year 4 2025

What a busy and exciting half term Autumn 2 has been! The children have worked incredibly hard across the curriculum and should be very proud of all they have achieved.

In English, we completed our much-loved Gorilla unit. The children immersed themselves in the story before planning and writing their own imaginative adventure narratives. We saw fantastic creativity, thoughtful structure and growing confidence in extended writing. We have now moved on to Leon and the Place Between, a beautiful picture book filled with rich, tantalising vocabulary and magical imagery. This text has inspired lots of discussion and curiosity. Alongside this, we have been developing our grammar skills, focusing on subordinating conjunctions and clauses, as well as using pronouns effectively to avoid repetition and make writing flow more smoothly.

In Maths, we continued our work on addition and subtraction, exploring a range of efficient strategies to help solve problems with confidence. The children have been encouraged to explain their thinking clearly and choose methods that work best for them. We also explored area, learning how to calculate it using practical and pictorial approaches. Towards the end of the half term, we began our multiplication journey, laying important foundations as we prepare for the end-of-year multiplication check. Times tables practice is becoming an important part of our daily routine.

Our History learning focused on the Anglo-Saxons. We explored the timeline from their invasion of Britain following the departure of the Romans, through to how they settled and what everyday life was like. We examined how their lifestyle changed with the introduction of Christianity and concluded our unit by learning about Alfred the Great and the end of the Anglo-Saxon era. The children showed great curiosity and asked thoughtful questions about life in the past.

In Design and Technology, the children researched, explored, designed and created their own moving posters, inspired by the circus theme from our English work. The purpose was to design a poster that would encourage members of the public to visit “the most magical circus of all time.” The children experimented with a variety of lever mechanisms, creating prototypes before finalising their designs. The finished posters were imaginative, colourful and full of movement.

In RE, we explored The Trinity and learned about the importance of water in Christianity, focusing particularly on the baptism of Jesus and its significance.

Finally, in Science, we continued our learning on States of Matter, investigating how materials change state through heating and cooling. Practical experiments helped bring this learning to life.

Overall, it has been a wonderful half term full of creativity, curiosity and progress. Well done to all the children for their hard work and enthusiasm!
