Art and Design

What are we aiming for?

Our Art and Design curriculum is designed to nurture creativity, self-expression, and critical thinking. We believe that every child is an artist, uniquely gifted with the ability to explore and interpret the world around them. Rooted in our Christian ethos, we view creativity as a reflection of the divine spark within each individual—an opportunity to celebrate the beauty, diversity, and wonder of creation.

Through a rich and varied curriculum, we aim to develop children who:

  • Have a creative vision and can confidently express their individuality through art and design.
  • Are proficient in a range of artistic techniques, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media.
  • Have a strong knowledge of diverse artists, their styles, and the cultural and historical contexts of their work.
  • Can think critically about art, evaluating and reflecting on their own work and that of others.

How do we achieve this?

Art and Design is taught in focused units across the academic year, allowing children to build both substantive knowledge and disciplinary skills over time. We use the AccessArt scheme, developed by experienced artists and educators, to deliver engaging, high-quality lessons that inspire creativity and curiosity.

Our curriculum follows a structured progression:

  • Autumn Term: Drawing and sketchbook development.
  • Spring Term: Colour and surface work, including painting, printmaking, and collage.
  • Summer Term: 3D work, exploring sculpture and construction.

In addition, during non-art half terms, children take part in weekly My Drawing Journey sessions to continue developing their drawing and observational skills—fundamental elements that underpin all artistic practice.

Children are encouraged to:

  • Explore and experiment with materials and techniques.
  • Investigate the work of artists from a range of cultures and backgrounds.
  • Express their ideas freely and reflect on their creative journey.

By fostering a love of art and design, we aim to equip children with the confidence, skills, and appreciation to continue their artistic journey beyond the classroom.

What difference is this making to our pupils?

Our Art and Design curriculum is helping children grow in confidence and learn how to express themselves in creative and personal ways. They enjoy trying out new materials and techniques, which encourages them to be confident artists who are willing to have a go and enjoy exploring a wide range of materials and mediums. By learning about artists from different cultures, children also gain a better understanding and respect for the world around them. They take pride in their work and learn to think about what they’ve made, as well as appreciate the efforts of their classmates. Overall, art helps our pupils develop important skills and a love of creativity that will continue to inspire them throughout their lives.
