An Introduction to Collective Worship at Forsbrook CE Primary School

At Forsbrook CE Primary School, Collective Worship is the heartbeat of our school community. Guided by our Christian vision and inspired by our motto, “Loving, Learning, Laughing in the Light of Jesus,” worship is central to our daily life, bringing our school together to pause, reflect, pray and celebrate. It is a special time where we grow together in faith, strengthen our relationships and recognise the unique value of every member of our school family as children of God.

As a Church of England school, Collective Worship lies at the heart of our distinctive Christian character. Through worship, our Christian vision, values and motto are lived out each day, nurturing the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of both pupils and adults. Worship provides opportunities to encounter the teachings of Jesus, reflect on Christian values and consider how these can shape our lives both in school and beyond.

Our worship reflects the rich traditions of the Church of England and our close partnership with St Peter’s Church, Forsbrook. Throughout the Christian year, we celebrate key festivals such as Harvest, Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter and Pentecost. We also use the colours of the Church’s liturgical calendar on our Worship Table and within classrooms, helping children develop an understanding of the Anglican tradition and the rhythm of the Christian year.

Every act of Collective Worship includes opportunities for prayer, stillness and reflection. We encourage children to ask big questions, think deeply about themselves, others and God, and to reflect on how they can make a positive difference in the world. Worship supports our pupils in developing spiritually and inspires them to become compassionate, courageous and hopeful members of society.

Pupils play a vital role in shaping worship through our Worship Committee. Worship Leaders help to plan, lead and evaluate Collective Worship, read prayers and Bible passages, lead reflections and gather the views of their classmates. Their leadership ensures that worship remains meaningful, engaging and relevant to our whole school community.

At Forsbrook, we want every child and adult to experience worship that is warm, welcoming and rooted in Christian hospitality. Our worship is shaped by the Church of England’s vision of being Inclusive, Invitational and Inspiring.

Inclusive

We celebrate the diversity of our school community and recognise that pupils and staff come from a range of faith backgrounds, as well as families with no religious faith. Everyone is welcomed, valued and respected.

Our worship is carefully planned so that all members of our community can engage with integrity. We use language that reflects our Christian faith while recognising that individuals are at different points on their own spiritual journey. Children are encouraged to ask questions, share their ideas and reflect on their own beliefs and experiences in a safe and respectful environment.

We believe that every child is uniquely created and loved by God, and our worship reflects this by ensuring that everyone has opportunities to participate, contribute and flourish.

Invitational

Participation in Collective Worship is always an invitation and never an expectation.

Children and adults are warmly welcomed to engage in prayer, reflection, singing and response in ways that feel meaningful and appropriate to them. Those of all faiths and those with no faith are encouraged to participate with integrity, knowing there is always the freedom to reflect quietly if they choose.

We provide opportunities for prayer and moments of stillness during every act of worship, recognising that these moments can nurture spiritual growth in different ways for different people.

Inspiring

Through Bible stories, Christian teachings, music, prayer and opportunities to explore life’s big questions, our worship inspires children and adults to grow in faith, character and understanding.

We encourage everyone to reflect on how they can show love, kindness, compassion, courage and forgiveness in their daily lives. Worship challenges us to think about the difference we can make within our school, our local community and the wider world, inspiring pupils to become courageous advocates who care for others and live out our Christian vision.

Whether celebrating achievements, marking important Christian festivals or reflecting on global events, our worship encourages us all to continue Loving, Learning and Laughing in the Light of Jesus.
