Year 4 – Spring 1 Update

Feb 27, 2025 | Year 4

This half term has been filled with creativity, discovery, and reflection in Year 4.

In English, we have been captivated by the story Our Tower by Children’s Laureate Joseph Coelho. We have focused on developing our writing skills by using the past progressive tense and accurately punctuating direct speech. As part of our learning, the children have been stepping into the shoes of one of the main characters, writing first-person recounts that bring their transformation to life. This imaginative journey has allowed them to deepen their understanding of character perspectives and refine their storytelling skills.

In Geography, we have explored the diverse continent of South America, studying its countries and rich landscapes. A key focus was comparing Brazil and the UK, examining their similarities and differences in terms of culture, climate, and geography. We also delved into the significance of the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, understanding their impact on global weather patterns. To bring our learning to life, the children worked in pairs to create their own weather reports, demonstrating their understanding in a fun and engaging way.

Our Art lessons have been filled with colour and creativity as we explored patterns inspired by the artist Shaheen Ahmed and various textiles from around the world. The children studied the use of shapes, lines, and colours to create intricate and exotic patterns, drawing inspiration from diverse cultures. They then applied their knowledge to design and produce their own unique patterns, celebrating artistic expression and individual creativity.

In RE, our focus has been on how people make the world a better place. We explored different faiths and the ways in which individuals lead by example, demonstrating kindness, generosity, and positive change. Through meaningful discussions and reflections, the children considered their own journeys and the choices they make in their daily lives. This unit has encouraged them to think deeply about their role in the world and how small actions can have a big impact.

In Science, we have been learning all about how we use electricity in our daily lives. The children had the opportunity to create simple circuits using a range of equipment and experiment with the importance of switches. They also investigated the role of insulators and conductors, understanding how they affect the flow of electricity. This hands-on approach has given them a solid foundation in electrical circuits and their practical applications.

This half term, the children have also taken part in a vast array of enrichment activities. They engaged in Mental Health Awareness Week, learning strategies for well-being and resilience. They deepened their understanding of online safety, ensuring they know how to navigate the digital world responsibly. World Faith Day was a fantastic opportunity for them to explore different beliefs and traditions, focusing on Judaism, fostering respect and appreciation for diversity. Additionally, many children participated in Bikeability, developing essential cycling skills and awareness.not to mention an afternoon of Zorbing!!!

It has been a fantastic and enriching half-term, filled with exciting learning experiences across all subjects. The children have embraced new challenges with enthusiasm and creativity, and we are incredibly proud of their progress.

We look forward to the next half-term, where even more adventures in learning await!
